Dave was in 3rd platoon and was killed in Arizona Territory. He had a borther who was wounded in Vietnam, also.
He was from Arvada Colorado and he lived in Rifle Colorado.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot I can say about Bob other than I remember him. I must have met him in the rear before he went out to the bush - perhaps on a working party or standing lines at night, but I do remember his face.
He was killed on May 11 in what some of us termed, "The Mothers Day Massacre". This was my first firefight in Vietnam. I had just gotten out to the bush the day before. I was in 1st platoon and 2nd and 3rd platoons were pinned down by a bunch of gooks in and around a bunker. They called up our platoon to go help the other two. Bob was with 3rd platoon and when 3rd platoon had begun their assault, Bob had a fireteam on the right flank of the assault and was one of the 4 Hotel Co. Marines killed that day in the assault.

When I first got to Hotel Co. on April 20, Pat was in the rear. Since I was brand new and didn't know anything about 'Nam, he became my mentor. He told me what was cool and what was not. Took me under his wing like a mother hen. He showed me where to to go to find the armory, where my position was when it came time to stand lines at night, and the other things a new guy needed tpo know to survive.
When we finally got out to the bush, the Company was in Arizona Territory. On May 13, we were crossing a big field with shoulder high elephant grass. We started taking small arms fire from the treeline on the right. Rifle fire, B-40's, RPG's, etc. Pat was one of the guys that got hit that day. I knew him for about three weeks and then he was dead.

Lt. Vivalacqua I didn't know very well. He was with 2nd platoon and was one of the guys that got hit the same day as Pat Best. I got to know him a little bit back in the rear and he really seemd like a decent guy for a Lt. Tom Kanik said all the 2nd platoon guys liked him. Lt. Vivalacqua was awarded a Silver Star for his actions on the day he was killed.

Danny was another one that got it the same day as Pat Best. I didn't know him that well either because he was from 2nd platoon. Seems like we might have been on a few of the Gunny's working parties together. I remember that when Hotel came out of the bush in May, we had a ceremony for all the guys killed while we were out there that time. I think there were 18 of them. Some of them probably got hit before I got there.

Willie was the company driver and was ambushed in a jeep between An Hoa and Liberty Bridge. He was bringing Mark Oliver and a couple others along with mail to the company. I think we (Hotel Company) were at Hill 65 at the time. If I remember correctly, I think the gooks stole the mail, too. According to Mark, Willie was killed instantly and Mark was wounded and medevaced. The other two were wounded also,but Mark can't remember who they were.

John was one of 4 Marines from 3rd platoon killed while the company was up on Charley Ridge. The whole company humped up to Charley Ridge that day and we set in there at night.
He was one of those killed with a short round from a mortar and he is one of those I referred to in my statement at the top of this page. I didn't remember that there were four of them until I went and checked my stuff.

Robert was one of the 4 Marines from 3rd platoon killed up on Charley Ridge. They were in a machine gun team that was set up behind (North) of where my position was.
I remember that night, because the rounds were going over our heads. There were a lot of huge rocks that we were using for cover and it was dark so we couldn't see much. We were taking hostile fire from somewhere.

James was one of the 4 Marines from 3rd platoon killed up on Charley Ridge.
As the rounds were going over our heads, we could hear them. After you're over there for a while, you can pretty much tell what direction they are headed and how far away they are going by the sound in the air and when they land.

Roger was one of the 4 Marines from 3rd platoon killed up on Charley Ridge.
As the one that killed them went over our heads, we knew something bad was going to happen because the sound was too close above us. In just a matter of seconds, we saw the explosion light up the night and knew that someone got hit because it was so close. Then we heard the dreaded sound of, "Corpsman up!" Then we knew for sure.
