Me on M-60 machine-gun.
9/16/69 - Hotel Company perimeter at An Hoa.
Bob Carroll. This was the road West of Hill 65 toward Hill 25.  We were on road O.P.'s (Observation Posts).
8/20/69 - Road to Hill 65
Carlos Wicks (on right).  On the "six by" or "deuce & a half".  Stack Arms was an In-Country Rest and Relaxation (R & R) Center on China Beach South of Danang.  Every 4 or 5 months, they would pull the "line companies" or "infantry companies" out of the the bush and take them to Stack Arms for 72 hours.
Beer, bar-b-que, phone calls on the "MARS" line, live music by "The Green Machine" and the privilege of sleeping within a relatively secure perimeter.  The Green Machine was five Marines with a band.  What a way to spend your tour - playing music.  No women, though.
10/5/69 - Hotel Company going to Stack Arms from Liberty Bridge.
Han - the S-2 scout, Parker (with his hand on his hip).
7/24/69 - Phu Lac 6 mess tent.
Mitch Mahoney. I think Mitch was with the mortars.
2/8/70 - Liberty Bridge
Bob Britt, machine gunner from Illinois.
2/8/70 - Liberty Bridge
My Patton pose. I've got a Clint Eastwood stogie in my mouth but it's hard to see in the picture.
10/14/69 - On top of Hill 65 looking North-Northeast.
F4 Phantom air strike
2/6/70 - Liberty Bridge looking Northeast from the compound on the North side.
My point walking Papasan.  Sometimes, when we were on patrol in an area where there was a great possibility of booby traps, we would have a "local" walk point for us.  The locals usually knew where the booby traps were if there were any.  With papasan in front of me, I could breath a little bit easier.  We had more casualties from booby traps than from live fire.
2/10/70 - On a patrol near My Loc 1.
Hotel Company humping into An Hoa the day after Christmas.  We had been brought in out of the bush the day before Christmas.
When we got to the rear, we were so glad to be in the rear for Christmas.  Almost everyone had Christmas packages waiting for them, some of them with bottles of various liquors.  We proceeded to consume said bottles with the expected result....We got screwed up and trashed the Company area.  Nothing major, just drunken fun.
Well, then the word came to saddle up.  They decided they weren't going to let us spend Christmas in the rear.
I mean, after all, the REMF's (Rear Echelon Mother Fuckers) were planning on a nice peaceful Christmas in the rear.  Then the rowdy boys from the bush come in and disturb their peace and quiet.  They sent us out on a hill overlooking An Hoa for Christmas.
12/26/69
Song Vu Gia. This was taken while standing on the bridge, looking West. "Song" is the Vietnamese word for river.  On the background map, you can see Song Vu Gia which means Vu Gia River.
2/6/70 - Liberty Bridge
The flame thrower guy.  From battalion weapons, I think.
2/6/70 - North compound at Liberty Bridge, looking Southwest.
Rich Sreniawski - He wasn't with Hotel.  I think he was with Echo 2/5.  We were in ITR, BITS, and Staging together, before coming to 'Nam.  He's from Midlothian, Illinois.  Here he's showing off his new radio he just bought at the PX (Post Exchange).
3/11/70 - III MAF Danang
<--- On the left - In Okinawa just before Vietnam
On the right - In Danang just ending Vietnam. ---->
Sometimes pictures really are more effective than words.
Me - My last night in Vietnam waiting for my Freedom bird. I'm pretty sure this is at the air facility. I think my plane took off at 3 or 4 A.M.  It was truly a bitterweet flight for me. I was happy to be going home, but all I could think about was Sonny, Butterbrain, Doc, Percy, and the others that didn't make it alive.  I cried within for quite a while.
3/13/70 - Danang
